Referral Process for TMS Treatment - Ensuring Ethical Practices

At our TMS clinic, we prioritize ethical medical practices when it comes to the referral process for selecting suitable candidates for TMS treatment. We understand the importance of comprehensive assessments and informed decision-making. Here is a breakdown of the steps involved in our screening process:

Assessing Patient Suitability:

To ensure patient safety and suitability for TMS treatment, we conduct thorough assessments. This includes evaluating medical and psychiatric history, assessing the presence of comorbid conditions like substance abuse, bipolar disorder, and PTSD. We also review the patient's medication history, ruling out any potential interference with TMS therapy, such as the use of benzodiazepines or mood stabilizers.

Trial of Other Treatments:

TMS therapy is typically considered after trial(s) of other treatment options, such as medication and psychotherapy, have been tried but found to be ineffective, less effective, or causing unwanted side effects. We review the patient's history of antidepressant trials, noting the number and duration of trials, as well as the responses and any side effects experienced.

Pre-Treatment Testing:

Additional tests may be reqested to ensure the best treatment protocol. These tests may include assessing serum TSH levels, Vitamin B12, folate, ruling out sleep d/o, or utilizing imaging studies like an MRI. These tests aid in tailoring the TMS treatment plan to the patient's specific needs.

Discussion of Risks, Benefits, and Informed Consent:

We prioritize open communication with patients, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of the potential risks and benefits associated with TMS therapy. This includes discussing any potential side effects. Patients are provided with written information about the procedure and are given ample opportunity to ask questions. Informed consent is obtained, and patients are required to sign a consent form, indicating their understanding of the risks and benefits of TMS therapy.

Referral Information:

If you or someone you know is suffering from depression or other mental health conditions that have not responded to other treatments, TMS therapy may be a viable option. We encourage you to reach out to your physician, nurse practitioner, psychiatrist, or psychologist to discuss the potential benefits of TMS therapy. Alternatively, you can contact our practice directly to learn more or schedule a consultation with one of our experienced clinicians.

By adhering to these ethical practices and ensuring comprehensive assessments, informed consent, and open communication, we strive to provide the highest standard of care to our patients. Your well-being and safety are our utmost priority.
